Ah, Friday. And a lovely Friday it is to follow Priceless Joy’s prompt of the week. And thanks to Sonya @ Only 100 Words for our wonderful photo this week. I enjoyed it so much. Make sure to take the time to read all the other stories here

Mira stared at the sculpture in the center of the room. This ball was not as much fun as promised. Her dress was too big and her shoes too small. Couples whirled around the dance floor, passing by the alcove she huddled in. There went her friend Alyssa, smiling as she went sailing by with her handsome partner. Mira refocused on the sculpture.

Except, it looked like one of the wings had moved. And not from the ice melting. Mira moved towards it, pulling up her dress once more. Alyssa was at least 3 inches taller than her. So why were her feet so dang small? Mira wondered as she tripped again, barely missing a dancing couple.

Up close, Mira marveled at the detail of the ice sculpture. She could see each feather, and the eyes, they were so alive. Mira jumped–did that sculpture just wink at her?

Nodding, the swan stretched out its wings; then shook itself, splashing the suddenly shrieking dancers. ย The swan swept into the air, circling above the panicking dancers before bowing its head to Mira. Then it rose, and rose, until it finally swooped through an open skylight.

Mira laughed in delight: the ball was suddenly so much more fun.

  1. Yes, that sounds much more fun! Delightful take on the prompt ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. This is wonderful! I can just see the swan coming to life and escaping through the skylight. It certainly would make the ball a lot more interesting!

  3. lovely story, with a nice touch of humour. Vivid descriptions … and I can picture the scene so easily as it plays out. What a way to brighten up a boring old ball!

  4. A lovely story, Samantha. ๐Ÿ™‚ I love the detail of the too small shoes and too big dress – it really brings it to life. An ice-swan coming to life must be an incredible sight to see!
